Artist Q+A — Tom McGuinness
NYC, soon to be Aotearoa.
Tell us a bit about your collection?
I've always had a messy car and I wanted to create a composition of a curated mess – The intention was to explore and have fun with the textures and lighting of American consumer items.
Rough drafting on paper, then full Adobe bro for this piece.
Why do you create?
My day job is doing more commercial design & animation - it's nice to spend time on personal work not attached to anyone but me.
What inspires you?
Mostly the internet, my friends' work, and as corny as it sounds, New York has a lot of interesting bits and pieces.
What frustrates you?
In a creative context; almost everything, I haven't found my zen.
How do you get over a creative block?
I have a lot to learn, but like to sleep on it or go for a walk, look back at your screen from a distance and you can see if there's something to salvage or not.
Who are 2-3 people whose work is inspiring you at the moment?
@tau_au - @dripperworld - @g.o.m.z.e
Advice for anyone trying to make it in the creative industries?
People are different - but as a generalist, I would say don't be afraid to not be a complete master of a certain craft, maybe that is not how you work. Having a range of outputs keeps it fresh for me.
