Artist Q+A — Thinking About Painting
Thinking About Painting
The combined dream of Ella Bates-Hermans and Lily Paris West. A creative partnership between two friends.
Te Whanganui-a-Tara, Wellington.
We are a creative duo that can’t sit still. We offer a range of skills from illustration through to brand identity, animation, photography, props-making and graphic design. We aim to blur the lines between fine art and design with our approach to anything.
Tell us a bit about your collection?
Our collection is a collaboration of our two illustration styles. We both love playing with cut-outs, texture and colour. The series was informed by a list of fun phrases that we have collected over the years and hoped to use someday in a project - and here we are!
What inspires you?
Each other! One of the main reasons we got together was to share our energy and ideas. We also love collating our inspiration in a tidy space.
What frustrates you?
Too many ideas and not enough time!
How do you get over a creative block?
We go through our hoard of kooky books collected over the years from op shops/grandparents. And if that doesn’t work, a walk in the sun seems to do the trick. And snacks. Many snacks.
Who are 2-3 people whose work is inspiring you at the moment?
The buzzy and beautiful photography of @elizavetaporodina.
@annabell.p.lee and their world of hand painted checks.
Anni Albers, Louise Bourgeois, Eva Hesse, Rachel Whiteread…. The list goes on!
Advice for anyone trying to make it in the creative industries?
Go easy on yourself. Mistakes are sexy. Ease into it by having a consistent form of income like a part-time job, money worries are the fastest way to kill any creative flow. Or if you’re going to dive in, get serious and make a business plan. Allow yourself time to do good work that you’re proud of. Be a good egg and good eggs will come to you.
