ARTIST Q+A — SARAH BURTON
Tell us a bit about your collection?
These images are part of a series called Walking Distance. I moved to Hackney 5 years ago and loved it immediately. I started walking the neighbourhood to get the lay of the land, then started shooting in celebration of my new surroundings. I have become very intimate with each street, shop and sunny corner.
It’s interesting that for much of last year and all of this year (so far), a neighbourhood stroll is the furthest we are allowed to venture.
Why do you create?
For the joy of it. When I get film back from the lab I feel like a five-year-old on Christmas day. Every. Time.
What inspires you?
Daily life, the transient nature of light.
What frustrates you?
How do you get over a creative block?
Reading The Gentlewoman magazine.
Who are 2-3 people whose work is inspiring you at the moment?
Greta Gerwig, Zadie Smith, Jamie Hawkesworth.
Advice for anyone trying to make it in the creative industries?
Do as much personal work as you can, hone your skills and find the thing that makes your work sing differently to everyone else.
