Artist Q+A — Alice Clifford
Tell us a bit about your collection?
They’re the outcome of some screen printing experiments with monoprinting I did in a workshop with Jonathan Lawes here in London at Sonsoles print studio.
Why do you create?
Unsure? I guess I always have and it’s not something I really focus on. I think it’s easy to get up inside your head when you think you think about ‘creating’, easy to get caught up in the outcome and psych yourself out of doing anything. I play about a lot with paint and ink but I try to avoid thinking about creating something specific. Creating is as much making dinner as it is making art.
What inspires you?
Loads of stuff. At the moment I’m really into Alexander Girard and American Folk Art.
What frustrates you?
Questionnaires - I never know what to say. Everything? Nothing? Not being able to get a table at the pub? The milk being off when you want a cup of tea? People who don’t move down into the train carriage at rush hour?
How do you get over a creative block?
Depends. Sometimes it helps to get away from it, other times you just need to push through that wall. Deeply unhelpful advice.
Who are 2-3 people whose work is inspiring you at the moment?
Advice for anyone trying to make it in the creative industries?
Be an interested person, ask questions, be willing to roll up your sleeves and chip in.
Where can we find more of your work?
Nowhere yet - I’ve got an instagram called acp_prints that will eventually have stuff on it but it’s very much a work in progress.
